Open Source and the European Union | Cyprus | OFE Capital Series

Tuesday, 16. June 2026
12:00 - 18:00

Internet Society Switzerland Chapter is one of the partners of OpenForum Europe’s event on “Open Source and the European Union”, which takes place in Nicosia on June 16, 2026.

In the context of the Capital Series Cyprus the event will bring Brussels-level discussions of open source policy directly to Nicosia. A unique opportunity for the local open source community to directly engage with EU and national policymakers to better understand policies that impact the Cypriot market.

The event will explore how open source and open technologies support Europe’s digital ambitions, from cyber security and digital public infrastructure to innovation and competitiveness. Together with policymakers, industry representatives, researchers and members of the open source community, we will discuss how European digital policies translate into national opportunities and challenges for the Cypriot ecosystem. The event will also create space for dialogue between EU institutions and local actors working with open technologies.

Panel 4 is titled “Trust by Design: Open-Source Systems for Secure Digital Infrastructure: The Swiss approach”, and will be moderated by Marianthe Stavrioud (ISOC-CH). The Swiss Ambassador, H.E. Christoph Burgener  will welcome the exceptional participants:

  • Leo Schumacher, investor Taler- Keynote
  • Nicola Rustignoli – Scion
  • Christian Engelhart – KIWIX
  • Prof.Dr. Adrian Perrig ETHZ

Switzerland’s “Trust by Design” approach is more than a concept—it is a coordinated ecosystem where government, academia, industry, and open-source communities actively build systems together rather than working in isolation. By embedding transparency, collaboration, and clear regulation from the outset, Switzerland shows that trust can be engineered, not assumed, creating digital infrastructure that is secure, scalable, and globally relevant.
