NGI0 Commons Fund update and 6th call for funding

The second plenary meeting of the NGI0 Commons Fund consortium took place in Brussels on January 30th 2025, in the context of the FOSDEM conference, where the presence of NGI0 at the FOSDEM was impressive.

During the plenary meeting, ISOC-CH developed the plan for the development of the so-called “tech dossiers”, which — for a start — will focus on three distinct thematic areas:

  1. AI in proprietary and FLOSS approaches and privacy implications, targeting school teachers on digital technology
  2. Video conferencing platforms, targeting like-minded event hosts with low technical skills
  3. Cloud solutions, targeting policy makers

Especially in the AI field, there’s lot of movement going on as was also reflected at FOSDEM featuring more than 20 talks (link: https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/track/ai/) in the main track, with many more in side-tracks. It was not only shown how the huggingface.co platform plays an increasingly important role in shipping various machine-learning models which can be run locally, but also how existing models can be tuned by oneself and which steps need to be considered in terms of CPU, GPU and memory resources to do so, also how to properly clean the new data to be inserted and more. Specifically in the Mozilla hacking room, many additional talks were held, giving a good overview of the existing and emerging AI landscape in the FLOSS field, which allows to use AI technology with query privacy, i.e., without powerful companies from the US (with, e.g., ChatGPT) or China (with, e.g., DeepSeek) learning about the questions of the entire world population, including hints to their wishes and problems they’re solving of intimate or business-related nature.

The description of the AI Tech dossier and the rest of ISOC-CH’s NGI0 implementation plan for the tech dossiers will be announced soon.

Note also that ISOC-CH is hiring!

Finally, never forget that there is always an open call for new projects. The project selection is running smoothly and the sixth call of NGI Zero Commons Fund opened up on February 1st 2025, with a deadline of April 1st 2025 12:00 CEST (noon).

Check out the guide for applicants and the frequently asked questions. And submit a proposal!
